Back Pain

Back pain is associated with soreness that originates from muscles, nerves, bones, and or joints that are connected to the spine.  According to health statistics, eight out of ten people will experience it at some time in their lives.  Back pain can range from a dull, consistent ache to an unexpected sharp stabbing feeling.  The more acute form generally comes on suddenly and can last from a couple of days to many weeks or even months.  If the pain last more than three months, it is considered chronic.

Government studies and research has found many benefits in the use of chiropractic treatment of participants that suffer from back pain.  Six out of eight studies showed that after six months of follow-up conventional medical care and chiropractic regimens the results were found to be comparatively effective in the short-term.  The long-term effects proved that chiropractic therapy is better at reducing recurring pain and more effective at preventing back pain after treatment ceased.  Another government study found treatment at a chiropractic clinic to be more effective than outpatient hospital treatments.

A herniated disc is a common cause of neck and back pain that can stretch as far the arms or legs.  Symptoms of a herniated disc include weakness in one or both legs, low back pain, pain in the center or back of the neck, a tingling sensation in the lower part of the body, pain in the shoulders or arms, and even loss of bowel or bladder control.  Be very careful lifting, bending or sitting for too long.  As your pain subsides, you will be able to work on your strength.  Try moderate exercise to your back and abdominal muscles in slow controlled movements with lightweights.  A chiropractor
can show you stretching exercises that will help as well.

The spine consists of a sequence of linked bones called "vertebrae".  The discs are actually a collection of sturdy and flexible connective tissues that hold the vertebrae together and cushion one vertebra from the other.  They are like rubbery pads that keep the hard bones of the vertebrae from grinding against each other.  The discs are made up of a harder outer ring of cartilage, the annulus, and the inner or center of the ring is filled with a gel-like matter, the nucleus.  A disc becomes herniated when the nucleus pushes back through the annulus toward the spinal canal putting pressure on the nerves.  These nerves are so sensitive to pressure that the slightest amount will cause severe pain and numbness and even cause weakness in the legs, sciatica.  In the center of the spinal column is the spinal canal, an empty gap that houses the spinal cord and other nerve roots.  The disks between the vertebrae allow the back to flex and bow.  Disks have the job of shock absorbers.
