Herniated Disc

A herniated disc is more common than you might think and usually responsible for neck and lower back pain that can stretch as far the arms or legs. The spine consists of a sequence of linked bones called "vertebrae". The discs are actually a collection of sturdy and flexible connective tissues that hold the vertebrae together and cushion one vertebra from the other. They are like rubbery pads that keep the hard bones of the vertebrae from grinding against each other.  The discs are made up of a harder outer ring of cartilage, the annulus, and the inner or center of the ring is filled with a gel-like matter, the nucleus.

A disc becomes herniated when the nucleus pushes back through the annulus toward the spinal canal putting pressure on the nerves.  These nerves are so sensitive to pressure that the slightest amount will cause severe pain and numbness and even cause weakness in the legs, sciatica.  In the center of the spinal column is the spinal canal, an empty gap that houses the spinal cord and other nerve roots.  The disks between the vertebrae allow the back to flex and bow.  Disks have the job of shock absorbers.

Symptoms of a herniated disc include weakness in one or both legs, low back pain, pain in the center or back of the neck, a tingling sensation in the lower part of the body, pain in the shoulders or arms, and even loss of bowel or bladder control.  If you experience a sudden pain anywhere from your neck and shoulders to your buttock and legs slow down your activity and consciously control your movements.  This will prevent you from aggravating the pain or condition.  Be very careful lifting, bending or sitting for too long.  As your pain subsides, you will be able to work on your strength.  Try moderate exercise to your back and abdominal muscles in slow controlled movements with lightweights.  A chiropractor can show you stretching exercises that will help alleviate your symptoms.

Herniated disc will feel more serious than it really is, that is little consolation when you are gripped by intense pain, but in reality most people recover relatively soon from a herniated disc.  With proper technique and care, a chiropractor will have you on your feet in no time at all.  Your recovery depends on you for the most part.

Some of the causes of a herniated disc may include:

  • Aging
  • Smoking
  • Overweight
  • Lifting with your back
  • Abrupt pressure to the back
  • Repetitive laborious activities
